Favorite Family Dishes

It is funny that this is a topic this week for my journal. This weekend all our family was together. We sat around the table talking about favorite foods that the grandmas make. We also talked about favorite foods we make at our own home. What we learned was that the dishes Trent and I love are NOT the dishes our children love. That was eye-opening. So here are some that were agreed upon as favorites.

1. Dad's Sweet 'n Sour Chicken This has definitely been a favorite since we lived at BYU. It was an addition in the ward cookbook. You can easily find that page because it is the one with sauce spilled all over it and the pages are all wrinkled. The book practically opens right to it. It is delicious. With just a little tweaking, Trent has perfected it. It is frequently requested for birthdays and family gatherings.

2. Chicken Noodles over Mashed Potatoes I don't even know why this is a food combination, but I've been eating it my whole life. They serve it in the cafeteria, so it must be legit. Who needs pasta AND potatoes? No one! That is what makes it the greatest comfort food ever. It just speaks warmth to the soul.

3. German Pancakes Once these go to breakfast delights were called "Puffy Egg Pancakes" in our house because a certain son wouldn't eat them because they weren't American food, and he didn't like foreign foods. That went on for years. We are all past that. Trent made these once a week as the kids were growing up. They would come right out of the oven at the perfect time so the kids could devour before they left for school. Trent always made the breakfast, and I always fixed the lunches. For some reason, these are higher on the list than a peanut butter sandwich, or a turkey roll-up. Go figure.

4. Pepperoncini Beef This beauty came as a great surprise. I'd never even heard of pepperoncini and was quite certain that our small grocery store wouldn't have it. They did! It is so simple, yet so delicious. Doesn't get much easier than a beef roast tossed into a crockpot with a bottle of sliced pepperoncini. Cook all day, while you are at work or play. Shred that deliciousness and put on a roll with a slice of cheese. It is irresistable now and later. There is never a bowl of pepperoncini beef to throw out on Clean-Out-The-Fridge Day. All of our kids have cooked this when they moved out. It must be a good one.

5. Tangy Chicken Trent and I love this dish. We recently found it is universally despised by all other members of the family - even the family that hasn't had it. So, when the kids move out, and we are really empty-nesters, Trent and I are going to eat this weekly.
