Holiday Celebration Traditions

Our daughter, McKenna, is a tradition follower. She loves traditions. I think it is because of her that we have many of our holiday traditions. We don't have many, but what we have are fun.

4th of July: For so many years we attended the parade in Rexburg. It was a lot of fun. In recent years, the parade has been a walking business advertisement. That isn't as fun. So, we have tried to ease ourselves out of that parade and slide into the Ashton parade. It is much shorter - even with the turn around and rerun back along the route. McKenna has not been happy with this adjustment. She is trying, however. A parade is a parade. We always gather for a barbecue at Grandma and Grandpa Erikson's house. We play games in the backyard and just chill together. In the evening we go to the Ashton fireworks because they are big and quick. We always meet Kendall and Susan, Cristy and Tom, my parents, and see friends. It is always a good day.

Labor Day: This has become my own tradition. Labor Day seems to be the end of the summer activities, so to celebrate (or fight off sadness) I go hiking. It is a great time to go to Union Falls. That is a good long hike (15 miles). It is a wonderful way to appreciate the beautiful blessing of this earth we are free to roam.

Thanksgiving: This is my FAVORITE holiday of all. Our little family made it a tradition to switch between Erikson and Grant families for dinner. Gathering as families is the highlight for me. As our families have gotten older, this has changed a little. We still gather with the Eriksons every other year, but we have a new tradition for the Grants. On the Grant years, we invite Tracie, Mom and Dad Grant, and Mom and Dad Erikson to our house for dinner. It is a cozy gathering. I LOVE IT! I'm so grateful to be able to provide for them. They are always nice to eat it. Most years we go to a movie in the evening. BEST DAY EVER!!!

Christmas: There are many traditions surrounding Christmas. The Eriksons always get together for a party (unless it is a pandemic time and we can't). The Grants gather on December 23rd to celebrate Dad's birthday and Christmas. On Christmas Eve, our family opens an early gift of pajamas. Trent reads the Christmas story from The Bible. Then we end the evening with snacks and watching The Christmas Story. Christmas morning we casually get up, since everyone is older, and open Christmas. Grandma and Grandpa Erikson come to visit sometime in the morning. Then all the Eriksons meet at their house to exchange gifts and have lunch. It is so chaotic and so much fun.
